It is not well known that there are some intrinsic problems with common routines for cross-validation of PCA models. A recent paper describes the problems, evaluate different cross-validation approaches and show how the problems can be overcome. (June 2008)

José Manuel Prats-Montalbán is teaching a course on Multivariate Image Analysis in Statistical Process Control at KVL on September 6, 2006. Process Chemometrics and Applied Multi-way Analysis

New associate professor in bio-informatics

The Food Technology group welcomes as new member Jürgen von Frese. His research will focus on novel developments in bioinformatics and chemometrics. Previously he headed the German competence center within the VICIM chemometrics network at the University of Münster. Jürgen coorperated with industry in the development of a wide range of applications, in particular concerning microarray data analysis and pattern recognition/support vector machines.

We are happy to announce that associate professor Søren Balling Engelsen, presently head of the Food Technology group at KVL, is appointed as full professor in Plant Food Science starting 1st June 2004.

During this summer, Plant Food Science & Food Technology at IFV will merge into one section. Søren will be head of this new section. (Mar 2004)

New 400MHz NMR installed at Food Tech

A new 400MHz (9.4 Tesla) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy instrument from Bruker was installed at the Food Technology Group. This is paid by a grant from The Danish Dairy research foundation, to Associate Professor Søren B. Engelsen.

The NMR spectrometer is dedicated to quantitative analysis of complex dairy products.

Later this year, the spectrometer will be upgraded with a High Resolution Magic Angle Spinning probe. (Apr 2003)

The N-way toolbox has been released in version 2.10. It is a minor upgrade meant to preserve compatibility with MATLAB 6.5 (Aug 2002)

Overview of Food Technology activities

Research-visitors at the Food Technology Group

To improve knowledge and widen our scope to novel research areas, we very much welcome extended visits from scientists associated with other (foreign) research institutes. Recent guests are e.g. Jordi Riu, working on parameter uncertainty estimation in multi-way factor models using Jackknife-based estimation methods, and Riccardo Leardi studying on the use of Genetic Algorithms (GA) for optimization of high complexity problems (August 2002).

New tools for multivariate data handling

Mats Josefson and coworkers have kindly supplied us with their newly developed MVACDF: "The MVACDF (MultiVariate Analysis Common Data Form) was developed to hold data tables that hold the raw data for multivariate classification or calibration. When multivariate data are created and used, it is beneficial to use an open binary standard format that can be easily converted into an ASCII representation. Import of MVACDF files is today available in Simca-P from Umetrics and Unscrambler from CAMO." (July 2002)

Virtual Institute of Chemometrics and Industrial Metrology

Read about the new virtual institute launched March 2002 in Brussels. The Food Technology group is one of the main contributors to the institute (May 2002).


New professor in chemometrics

Prof. Harald Martens was recently appointed adjungated professor in the Food Technology group at KVL. Having both Prof. Lars Munck and Harald Martens is going to provide a boost to the group as well as to chemometrics in Denmark (may 2002).
